Emma Stenhouse is an emerging Indigenous Artist on a journey to belonging and becoming more connected with her Ngarrindjeri heritage. Her work is predominantly inspired by nature and connection to country, using elements of contemporary art and traditional iconography. Each piece is braided with learning, a connection between artist and viewer and a continuation of culture, creating a platform for cross-cultural exchange. Growing up in Broken Hill, Outback New South Wales, Emma has a depth of connection to the arid lands of the bush. This is often evident in her use of colours inspired by the red dirt, and the simple concept of nurturing nature to continue its growth and sustainability.
The Artwork’s Story as told by Emma
Women’s Work
Together they sit, legs crossed in the sand, a small circle, eyes down at their hands. The Women, the gatherers, they sit and weave. The rushes they have collected, carefully prepared and now slowly they stitch. The young ones, they listen to the Aunties, the Elders they learn the ways. The way to weave, the way to gather. A circle of strong women who teach and guide. The womens work is tidal, like the seasons, it changes in form and depth. There is always that one woman we look to throughout our journey, we seek her shoulder, her warmth, her care. Over the years, she may take on many forms a mother, a friend, a sister, an aunty but she is the one who shows us how things work. Her courage and support is crucial to our own. Her work and ours, is never done.
Emma is a proud Ngarrindjeri woman, with strong links to the Gunditjmara people of Warrnambool. She would like to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land where her artwork was created, the Peek Whuurrong people of the Marr Nation, and pay her respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging.
